Quality Coverage #3: Tax Scandal in Europe

Using a technique they called “CumCum” and “CumEx” the super-rich stole 55 billion of taxpayers money.

A network of journalists (CORRECTIV) worked years on uncovering the biggest tax theft of all times. During around 2001 and 2015 the smartest minds in Frankfurt’s skyline buildings helped the super rich not only to evade taxes, but to actually steel more than 50 billion from the authorities.

So far it remains unclear how it exactly worked. But that might be revealed as the journalists release more info bit by bit to keep the topic alive for a couple of months I suppose.

For now there are several articles in different languages available that were publishes in different media outlets. Additionally there are a videos, documentaries and interviews. Especially the interview of a German lawyer  (now a whistle-blower) who helped with the fraud is worth watching. According to him the authorities have failed to fill the loopholes in the laws even though they knew about the procedure for quite some time. Additionally even a former German Head of State is said to have profited from the tax theft (whoever I talk to: They all suspect Christian Wullf). Other German public figures also allegedly have used the the scheme to enrich themselves, yet no names are known.
